A resident of the Pudong New Area has been fined 500 yuan (US$72) for abandoning his pet dog, police said on Saturday.

Residents found the injured dog at the intersection of Dongfang and Longyang roads on July 28, and took him to a veterinarian.

The dog had bone fractures in the pelvis, and disease due to old age.

He was likely injured by a passing car, police said.

Residents who found the dog got in contact with the owner, a man surnamed Wu, through a registration tag.

Wu allegedly said he had abandoned the dog because of its age.

The residents then sought help from police who summoned Wu to Nanmatou Road Police Station on July 30 for questioning.

Wu allegedly confessed that he had abandoned the dog in a street garden near the intersection.

He said he had raised the dog for 18 years. The dog's name is Wangzai.

Wangzai has been since placed in a dog shelter run by  police.

Pudong police said they have fined about 400 pet owners for breaches of the city’s dog rules.

People who abandon their pets can be fined up to 2,000 yuan in Shanghai.
