A total of 64 suspects were caught for allegedly producing and selling fake toys of famous brands, Shanghai police said on Thursday.

Police in Huangpu District started investigation in April this year when a resident reported that he purchased alleged authentic toys from an online vendor, but they turned out to be counterfeits.

Through their investigation, police found that the fake toys were produced in three factories in Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, and Lu’an City, Anhui Province. The knock-offs were sold both on the Internet and in street shops.

The suspects allegedly copied the designs of the authentic toys, indicated on the packaging that they were authentic, and sold them at prices 70 to 80 percent lower than the market prices of the authentic ones.

The suspects were rounded up in Guangzhou, Chenzhou and Lu’an in a police raid on August 20, with over 100,000 fake toys seized. Police said the authentic counterparts of the fakes are worth about 400 million yuan (US$59 million).
