Handmade food and handicrafts from rural Jinshan were showcased at a weekend fair in the Pudong New Area, bringing rustic charm to a new downtown hotspot.

The fair, known as WHATMARKET, kicked off at Crystal Plaza in the Qiantan area, an emerging international community known as a "new Lujiazui" along the Huangpu River.

A stall selling freshly baked Tinglin-style mooncakes, listed among Jinshan’s intangible cultural heritage, was jammed with customers.

“New-style mooncakes are springing up, but I love traditional flavors,” said a customer surnamed Lin. “It’s not easy to find Tinglin mooncakes, which use traditional skills and ingredients such as lard. I came especially to buy some.”

Rice, dendrobe stem and other agricultural products from Tinglin were also popular with customers.

Other examples of Tinglin culture were also displayed, such as a traditional waist drum performance. Local farmers beat the drums while leaping and singing, which aroused a thunder of applause.

According to the Jinshan Culture and Tourism Bureau, downtown residents can experience the best of Jinshan at the fair, without traveling some 50 kilometers to the rural area.

The fair is planned to return in October.
