British star Rowan Atkinson is warmly welcomed by local fans.

"Johnny English 3," the action-packed spy comedy, will be released in China on November 23.

Rowan Atkinson, its star, was in Shanghai to promote the movie and meet local fans on Thursday.

Atkinson plays an accidental secret agent in the series that has, since 2003, cultivated a huge fan base for its British humor and advanced spy gadgets.

A 16-minute episode from the film, which also features virtual reality technology, was shown during his visit.

The comic actor was also involved in the film’s scriptwriting and editing, and endured six months of physical training to prepare for the role.

The movie tells the story of a now retired Johnny English who becomes the secret service's last hope after the identities of all active undercover agents are exposed because of a cyber attack.

The film also stars Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson and Olga Kurylenko, who starred in the 2008 James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."
