The Shanghai Film and Television Copyright Services Institution was established on Tuesday to propel development of the local film and TV industry.

According to Hu Jingjun, deputy director of the publicity office of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China, this is another important move by the city following the establishment of the Shanghai Film and Television Production Services Institution five years ago to develop Shanghai into a global film and television center.

“We will provide free, one-stop copyright development and protection services for filmmakers from all over the country,” said Hu. “New vitality will be brought to the city of Shanghai, the birthplace of Chinese cinema.”

The institution will gather film and legal professionals to offer services related to copyright market value, trade, financing, legal protection and technical detection.

It will also collaborate with local banks, law firms and colleges to cultivate young copyright professionals through workshops.

Veteran filmmaker Zhang Jianya, a member of the institution’s copyright evaluation team, said they will provide advice for film companies in script and spin-off development.

“With the help of the institution, the competitiveness of Shanghai-produced film and TV series will be greatly improved,” Zhang added.

Five years ago, the Shanghai Film and Television Production Services Institution was set up to offer domestic and foreign crews information and help in film and TV production.

A wide range of services, including location coordination, camera and equipment rental and post-production, are offered.
