A total of 9,310 people living in the coastal areas of the Pudong New Area have been evacuated on Saturday afternoon ahead of typhoon Ampil, Pudong’s flood prevention headquarters said.

It is estimated that a total of 46,000 people staying at work sites, dilapidated buildings and temporary shelters in nine coastal towns will be evacuated to the safety of 46 primary and middle schools.

So far, 46 of 47 local fishing ships have sailed back and docked in safe areas, for example the sluice of the Dazhi River, to shelter from the gusty winds.

On top of that, 404 out-of-town fishing ships are sheltering in ports and sluices of coastal Pudong. Of them, 15 have docked.

The inland rivers of Pudong have lowered their water levels to 2.45 meters to brace for the upcoming downpours.

Pudong has prepared 287,000 woven bags filled with sand and 1,100 water pumps to drain water away in case sea waves pour through the levees. Also, 9,166 members of 436 anti-flood teams with 660 vehicles are standing by.
