A total of 109 tenants were cleared out of 22 apartments in Yangpu District on Friday, police said on Saturday.

Those apartments, found in four residential complexes in Siping Road subdistrict, housed more tenants than would be safe for people living in them and their neighbors, police said.

Police inspect one of the group lease apartments on Friday.

The landlords or sub-landlords divided the apartments into parts of confined space to accommodate more people. Police said the 22 apartments have 80 double-deck beds in total.

In one apartment, the tenants were illegally charging several e-bike batteries at home at the same time, which could easily cause power glitch and fire.

In many cases, the apartments were rented by shops in nearby shopping malls to accommodate their employees who are often from out of town, according to the police.

This is a part of the citywide police actions carried out on Friday to improve public safety.

Shanghai police said they inspected over 17,000 business and other types of venues around the city for fire safety problems and clues of criminal activities.
