The 20th birthday of Shanghai International Arts Festival and 40th anniversary of China’s launch of reform and opening-up was celebrated on the Bund yesterday by artists from around the world.

Themed as “20•40 Coming Home,” the event featured many old friends, who have appeared at the arts festival in the past decades, sharing sweet moments with the audiences while performing their latest works.

The artists included renowned choreographers Shen Wei and Yang Liping, composers Tang Dun and Gong Tianpeng, conductor Tang Muhai, costume and visual artist Timmy Yip, Peking Opera artist Shang Changrong and theater performers Tao Hong, Xi Meijuan and 82-year-old Jiao Huang.

Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) believes the Shanghai festival is an art bridge that connects Shanghai with the most beautiful cities in the world.

Theater director Tian Qinxin, who directed the event, also shared how grateful she was that the festival gave her a platform to perform in the early years of her career.
