A psychedelic visual artwork, featuring thousands of goldfish in illuminated tanks, will make its debut at the Shanghai World Financial Center today.

Art Aquarium, produced by Japanese artist Hidetomo Kimura, features 5,000 goldfish in 100 LED-lit tanks.

As a big fan of traditional Japanese culture, Kimura has used many Japanese elements.

Goldfish swim in delicate Edo kiriko glass bowls, there are tanks draped with lace and shaped like Japanese lanterns, and tanks in the style of wooden-frames which hark back to the Edo Period (1603-1868). Light designs create a variety of colorful background images such as sakura blossoms.

“I hope people will know that the Art Aquarium is a combination of products, special design and the ecosystem inside the aquarium tank,” Kimura said.

The exhibition will be displayed on the 94th floor of the Shanghai World Financial Center from today to February 17, 2019.

Admission is 80 yuan (US$11.5) for a child and 120 yuan for an adult.

Opening hours are between 9am and 10:30pm.
