Residents buy tangerines from Chongming Island in Zhongshan Park in Shanghai on November 12, 2018.

Tangerines and oranges from Chongming Island and the Pudong New Area were a hit at city parks on the first day of sales.

About 4,500 kilograms were sold at Yangpu Park yesterday, with about 2,500 kilograms sold at each of another seven parks. Sales run between 6am and 11am until November 30.

“The weather was rainy, and many people did not know about the sales as it was the first day. We expect even better numbers for the rest of the month,” said Zheng Jie, an official in charge of the sales.

The fruit arrives at the parks in the early morning one day after it is picked. The price is set at 3.8 yuan (55 US cents) per kilogram, much lower than the current market price.

This year, the city harvest is expected to reach nearly 130,000 tons, much higher than in previous years.

Good weather during the ripening season means this year’s fruit should be even sweeter than usual.
