Doctors from Shanghai No.10 People's Hospital perform a thyroid surgery.

Shanghai Thyroid Disease Research Center was established at Shanghai No.10 People’s Hospital on Saturday in an effort to improve and regulate diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease in the Yangtze River Delta Region.

The incidence of thyroid disease has been increasing in the nation in recent years. The prevalence of thyroid nodule rose from 2.73 percent in 1999 to the current 20.43 percent, which means among every five people one has thyroid nodule.

“The large number of patients, limited medical resources and diversified guidelines at home and abroad impaired proper diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease. We should develop a proper health system and clinical guideline in line with Chinese people,” said Dr Zou Dajin, director of Shanghai Thyroid Disease Research Center.

“About 50 percent of thyroid nodule surgeries are unnecessary. We worked out directions to regulate clinical practice and classify patients for appropriate treatment based on our big data research and clinical study. The guideline has been recognized and promoted nationwide.”

To make patients convenient and streamline the process, the thyroid disease center also created a one-stop service network by combining all necessary departments and checks in one center. Patients can get reports on thyroid diseases within one hour instead of running between different departments and waiting for days for the results.
