One-third of air purifiers tested had poorer performance in removing formaldehyde than their stated capacity, the Association of Environmental Protection Industry of Shanghai announced yesterday.

A Honeywell model had the worst formaldehyde efficiency in the sample.

The association picked the bestsellers in the city between January and August last year and tested the 16 which claimed to have the strongest formaldehyde extraction performance. Prices were from 2,699 yuan (US$393) to 12,999 yuan.

The Honeywell’s efficiency was only 78 percent, below the national standard of at least 80 percent.

A Haier model had the highest efficiency, reaching 98 percent.

The performances of many purifiers did not meet those claimed in online promotions.
