A 20-year-old man has been detained for assaulting a police officer at Hongqiao Railway Station on Tuesday, railway police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place at midday on Tuesday when a few police officers entered the waiting area of the station to look for a wanted fugitive.

They came across a man, surnamed Huang, who they felt resembled the fugitive and asked him to show his identity card.

Huang refused, and when police insisted, he verbally insulted and then physically assaulted a police officer.

The officer's face and hands were injured, police said.

Huang, who is from Sichuan Province, was taking a train back home on Tuesday, according to police.

He allegedly said he assaulted the police officer because he "lost his mind".

Police said Huang was not the fugitive they were looking for.
