A number of shoes sold at the Huijin Department Store in Xuhui District are suspected of being substandard.

The 40-plus pairs of shoes branded "D:FUSE" and "AS" were valued at 25,000 yuan (US$3,725), according to the Shanghai Market Management and Supervision Bureau.

Officials made an initial judgement after checking whether the soles of the shoes came loose or base cracked when bent.

These are the two most common quality problems with female shoes, said Hong Xiaojie, an expert with the Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research.

These shoes have been sent to a laboratory for further testing including for formaldehyde levels.
