Mourning, training session held at local mall after Sichuan fire
Hundreds of people gathered over the weekend at Global Harbor Mall in Putuo District for a ceremony to mourn firefighters who died while fighting a forest fire in southwest China. The mall also hosted a fire safety training session aimed at youngsters.
The twin towers of the Global Harbor Mall were illuminated over the weekend to pay tribute to the 27 firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in Sichuan Province on March 31.
The Putuo Fire Prevention Bureau also arranged a three-day training event at the mall for local children during the Qingming Festival holiday. About 100 children learned the basics of fire prevention and self-protection.
Local firefighters also brought a fire truck and a variety of firefighting equipment to the event.
The deadly forest blaze first broke out on March 30 in a remote area in the mountains in Muli County. After killing 27 firefighters and three locals, as well as engulfing about 15 hectares of forest, the blaze was extinguished on April 2.
