'Dance in the Sun' explores Xinjiang culture
An innovative variety performance combining music, dance and poetry is looking to scoop this year’s Wenhua Award at the 12th China Art Festival.
“Dance in the Sun,” produced by Xinjiang Art Theater, portrays three young protagonists: a painter, singer and dancer, along with officials from a big city, who visited villages in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The group encounter and feel the region’s hospitality from its various ethnic groups, as well as appreciating its spectacular scenery and profound culture.
“We intend to show the contemporary Xinjiang,” the show’s director Xing Shimiao said. “And we want to expose to the world the spirit of the local people.”
The performance reveals the complete geographic nature across Xinjiang: the pasture plateau, desert, forest and rivers.
Wearing different ethnic costumes with modern twists, the artists will present 11 dances in the show, expressing the cultural norms of esthetics and harmony that are present among the country’s roots.
Composed by Liu Chi, the melody of the household song “My Motherland” is infused in the performance, expressing the local people’s love for the country.
“Xinjiang dance is not only characterized by its colors, emotions and rhythms, but also by its idea, connotation and soul,” said Gao Shan, co-director of the show.
