A man, who entered the tracks of Metro Line 2 on early Saturday morning, was hit by an empty train on a test run and died on the way to hospital, the Metro police have confirmed.

Metro operations had not started yet when the incident happened around 5am on Saturday.

Shanghai Metro told Shanghai Daily the man was a scavenger. He walked his bike onto the tracks between Chuansha and Middle Huaxia Road stations in Pudong.

This section of tracks is above the ground. The Metro operator said the the man forcibly entered the tracks and even though the train driver applied the brakes hard it was too late. The collision could not be avoided.

The incident, however, didn't affect the subway operations, when they began.

How and why the man entered the tracks is still being investigated.

Shanghai Metro warned that no one should enter the train tracks under any circumstances. It is extremely dangerous as the train does not have enough braking length. Moreover, such a trespass can jeopardize the normal operation of the Metro and threaten the safety of passengers on the train.
