The suspect has allegedly confessed.

A man who worked for a sports chain has been charged with allegedly stealing money held on customers’ membership cards.

Police in Xuhui District received a report from the company at the end of May that several customers had complained that money on their membership cards had been deducted although they had not made any purchases.

The chain doesn't require a password or that the card be presented for a purchase.

A shop clerk surnamed Zhao was apprehended on June 14.

Zhao has allegedly confessed that he stole money from membership cards which hadn’t been used for years. There was usually a few hundred yuan left on them.

Zhao, who worked as a cashier at a shop, said he took cash from the register when a customer paid with cash and then entered the membership numbers to make up the balance, police said.

He said he needed the money to cover his credit card debt.

He had stolen over 90,000 yuan (US$13,000) from several membership cards, according to the police.
