Shanghai Transportation Commission is working on public transportation plans and infrastructure for the upcoming second China International Import Expo.

All construction work on roads in Changning, Qingpu and Minhang districts near the exhibition center will be finished by the end of September, said Yang Xiaoxi, deputy head of the commission, on Monday.

More than 80 percent of visitors came to the venue by public transport last year.

“The demand for taxis last year was larger than we expected, and peak passenger flow every day was later than we anticipated,” Yang said. “The designated bus service was also popular among group visitors.”

The commission expects about half of all visitors to go to the CIIE by Metro. Medium-capacity bus route No. 71 will have a new timetable with a temporary extension from Shenkun Road to the CIIE venue.

As the CIIE expands, pressure on the west exit of the venue may increase, so more shuttle buses and parking areas will be introduced.

Most of the parking areas for the first CIIE last year will be used again this year. A new parking lot exclusively for buses is being built in Minhang District. The commission will also open up temporary parking areas based on actual passenger flow during the event.
