Prosecutors in Jinshan District filed procuratorial suggestions to a local bus operator to enhance the training and supervision of its drivers following a fatal accident involving a bus and a pedestrian.

The bus driver, who failed to stop when a woman was on a zebra crossing, was sentenced to a year in jail with a year's reprieve, prosecutors said.

The lenient sentence came after he had paid the dead’s family 80,000 yuan (US$11,223) in compensation and had received their forgiveness.

Prosecutors said the accident happened at noon on January 9 on Weiling Road.

The woman, Ma, fell to the ground when the bus hit her. She was taken to hospital but died a few days later.

Investigating the case, Jinshan prosecutors said they found some drivers at the bus company with no strong sense of safe driving and that there was a lack of supervision.

Prosecutors said there had been a positive response to its procuratorial suggestions. On a recent visit, they found the company had organized classes in traffic laws and safety and had installed recording devices on buses to check driver behavior.

By June this year, the procuratorate had filed 383 procuratorial suggestions in different fields to related authorities or organizations since 2013 with 367 of them accepted by recipients.
