Shanghai Cancer Center aims to become a national cancer medical center under the support of the National Health Commission and the city government, hospital officials said on Friday.

Based on a new branch which opened in the Pudong New Area three months ago, the hospital will build itself into a national cancer medical center with departments for pathology, translational medicine, medical equipment research and new drug development.

The new branch of Shanghai Cancer Center and the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center, which is also affiliated with the cancer center, are a major part of the national cancer medical center, according to Dr Yu Xianjun, vice president of Shanghai Cancer Center.

“The branch is a new milestone for our hospital, whose location in Xuhui District is crowded by patients from all over the country,” Yu said. “The branch provides a good opportunity for us to design and run a hospital with modern managements and medical concepts. It will focus more on clinical research and a thorough adoption of multidisciplinary treatment for cancer patients.”

The new hospital also features an improved physical layout.

“Now, all doctors from different department serving the same disease stay in offices connecting with each other. Patients can receive a group consultation and be introduced to relevant doctors just nearby,” Yu said.
