Ten top boxers will fight for a WBC (World Boxing Council) championship at the weekend in Hongkou District.

The Ringside & WBC Continental Champion Challenge Match will be held at the newly opened Quyang Bailian Shopping Mall on Quyang Road on Saturday night.

The contenders will include world champions Qu Peng from China and Suthat Kakalek from Thailand. Qu, a native of Inner Mongolia, will also compete for the WBC Asia championship. He has won China's light heavyweight championship and is a silver belt holder of the OPBF (Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation) Asia.

Multiple world champion Oscar De La Hoya will present the gold belt to the winner. He attended the weigh-in ceremony on Friday.

The contest is part of the city's efforts to promote boxing among the public and drive the development of local professional boxing clubs. Local boxing gym Ringside is negotiating with the shopping mall and De La Hoya to host such top level fights regularly.

The first batch of three professional boxing gyms have been opened in Huangpu and Jing'an districts as well as the Pudong New Area. Another three are planned in Xuhui and other downtown districts.
