Doctors remove glass fragments from child's knee

Small bits of glass remained lodged inside a 3-year-old boy's knee joint for about one month before removal by surgeons at Xinhua Hospital.

Doctors at Xinhua Hospital conducted surgery to remove five broken glass fragments from a 3-year-old boy. The fragments entering the boy's knee joint after he fell on broken glass on the ground.

The family took the boy to a nearby hospital soon after the accident one month ago. At that time, a large piece of glass was pulled from the boy's knee.

However, the boy developed a swollen knee and experienced difficulty walking after his wound healed about two weeks later.

An X-ray found five glass fragments still inside the boy's knee, close to nerves and blood vessels.

Parents took the boy to Xinhua Hospital, where doctors conducted minimally invasive surgery to remove all remaining fragments.

Dr Li Hai from Xinhua said they have removed small items like broken needles from children’s joints in the past, but this was the first time that so many glass fragments were extracted by hospital doctors.
