Joint approach to low-carbon future
The launch of the Shanghai Low Carbon Technology Innovation and Application Platform in Songjiang
The Shanghai Low Carbon Technology Innovation and Application Platform in Songjiang District was put into use recently. Its researchers are focused on technological breakthroughs in high-end functional material production, carbon dioxide cycling and green carbon transformation.
Low-carbon technologies, due to their divergent goals, long research cycle, demand for funding and lack of overall solutions, have long been confronted with a gap between research and industrial application.
Songjiang District joined forces with the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Advanced Research Institute to co-establish the Shanghai Low Carbon Innovation and Application Platform in 2017. It is aimed at driving innovation in the low-carbon technology industry and narrowing that gap.
“Most low-carbon technologies are patents belonging to foreign companies, whereas China doesn’t have ready-made technologies. But since our technicians and research teams have overseas working experience, they hope to achieve localization of the advanced technologies through our platform,” said Wang Hui, director of the platform.
As one of the first batch of 18 research application platforms in Shanghai, the platform so far has an area of more than 4,800 square meters for research and development. A strong team is made up of experts from universities and institutes including Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, ShanghaiTech University, East China Normal University and Shanghai Normal University.
“The research application platform at the G60 High-tech Corridor is conducive to the forming of an innovation network combining the former separated research resources,” said a Songjiang Committee of Science spokesperson.
