The Guangfulin Archeological Site Exhibition Hall in Songjiang District will open within the year and final preparations on the venue are now underway, its operator has announced.

The exhibition hall covering 7,788 square meters is located inside the Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park. The complex is in the shape of three ancient pottery jars, with its design drawing inspiration from jars unearthed during Guangfulin's archeological excavation.

Because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, indoor tourism venues are prohibited from welcoming visitors at present, said Wang Liang, curator of the museum.

"The opening of the exhibition hall depends on the situation of the pandemic, and once the ban is lifted, the museum will be opened to the public soon," Wang told Shanghai Daily on Wednesday.

A relic park has been built at the Guangfulin archeological site, where Shanghai’s earliest-known residents lived some 4,000 years ago.

The site was discovered by farmers in 1958 as they were digging a new waterway.

The indoor area of the exhibition hall covers 2,960 square meters and is comprised of four display areas. These areas will take visitors on a journey through time and showcase the archeological excavation process at Guangfulin through exhibits of cultural relics.

Another highlight of the relic park are three museums partly above and below water, which also remain closed due to the coronavirus.

Relics including pottery, spinning wheels, cooking vessels and dishes are displayed, with scenes from ancient times to the present also showcased.
