The temperature soared to 34 degrees Celsius in Shanghai's downtown Xujiahui on Sunday, marking it the hottest May 3 in 147 years.

However,  summer is yet to come.

Temperatures will drop on Monday to a high 32 degrees and low of 23 degrees under sunny skies, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

And with a cold front from northern China moving in, temperatures will drop to 25 degrees on Tuesday and remain in the 20s for the week.

Rain is expected on Tuesday, as well as Thursday and Friday after a brief respite on Wednesday.

The official arrival of the meteorological summer requires the daily average temperature to be above 22 degrees for five days in a row after the solar term lixia, or summer begins, which falls on Tuesday this year.
