More than 80 museums in the city will mark International Museum Day on Monday with three days of free or cut-price admission.

The museums taking part include popular attractions such as the Shanghai Auto Museum, Shanghai Museum of Glass and China Maritime Museum. Most will open for free from Saturday through Monday.

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and Shanghai Natural History Museum will have half-price tickets on Sunday and Monday.

Entry to Guanfu Museum in Pudong will be half-price on Monday and Tuesday, while Shanghai Film Museum in Xuhui District will offer half-price entry from Saturday through Monday.

International Museum Day was established in 1977 to raise awareness of museums as “an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples,” according to the International Council of Museums.

This year, Shanghai has established a platform to allow citizens and tourists to visit various museums online as well as listen to explanations and lectures, said Cheng Meihong, deputy director of the city’s Administration of Culture and Tourism.

Meanwhile, 100 local museums will open free to medical workers to the end of the year to pay tribute to their work during the COVID-19 outbreak.
