A man has been apprehended by police after several people suffered knife wounds in downtown Shanghai.

Police in Xuhui District said they received a report about an incident on Jianguo Road W. near Taiyuan Road at 11:05pm on Wednesday.

They said a 39-year-old man surnamed Shen had been driving in the area, with his mother and girlfriend in the car, when he hit a non-motor vehicle and then two cars, injuring three people.

Police say Shen then got out of the car and injured his girlfriend and five passers-by with a knife. He also beat up another person, they said.

Shen was caught at the scene, and the injured were taken to hospital.

Shen’s family are said to have told police that he had been acting weird and having hallucinations over the past few days but had never been diagnosed with mental diseases.

Police said Shen had not been driving under the influence of alcohol or drug and that he would be tested for mental problems.
