This year’s long plum rain season is offering an ideal environment for mosquito growth and its density is expected to keep rising under current weather conditions, local health officials said on Thursday while kicking off a citywide mosquito-control campaign.

The campaign will last until mid-September, said Shanghai Health Commission.

Professional vector-control teams have started to do chemical spraying and inspections in old residential complexes, wet markets, garbage-collection sites and other key public venues found with high mosquito density.

With the arrival of summer, the health authority is also warning residents to be aware of vector-born diseases liek dengue fever while going to places with such prevelance. Those showing symptoms like fever, headache, joint pain and skin rash should go to the hospital and inform doctors about their travel history for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Shanghai has reported seven cases of dengue fever this year as of July 12. All are imported cases from tropical countries in Southeast or South Asia like the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The case number is 77 percent lower than the same period of last year, due to influence of the novel coronavirus epidemic, according to Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The city reported a total of 107 dengue fever cases, all imported, last year, 71 more than the previous year.
