Man in detention after ear-biting incident

A man said to have bitten another man on the ear on an early morning last month in downtown Shanghai was caught in Xinjiang on Wednesday, police said.

The incident is said to have taken place outside a bar on Julu Road in Huangpu District at 4:30am on June 26.

Police said a 25-year-old man surnamed Wang was drunk and fighting with a 25-year-old man surnamed Mai and a 34-year-old woman surnamed Ma. A 37-year-old man surnamed Li was passing by when he spotted the brawl and tried to intervene. 

However, Wang bit Li’s left ear and then ran off.

Li told Shanghai TV that one-third of his left ear had been bitten off, and doctors said it would require major surgery to repair it.

Wang is in detention and may face criminal charges, police said.
