A 37-year-old man was detained for nine days for allegedly stealing women’s underwear, Shanghai police said on Thursday.

The man surnamed Shan allegedly told police that the theft was motivated by spite after breaking up with his girlfriend two months earlier.

Police in Huangpu District started their investigation earlier this month after a man surnamed Liu, who lives in the Laoximen neighborhood, reported to them on August 6 that his daughter’s underwear had gone missing from the laundry rack in front of their house four times since July.

From street surveillance cameras, police spotted a man stealing underwear belonging to Liu’s daughter. They identified him and tracked him down the same day.

Police said Shan had stolen underwear in his bag when he was caught.

Shan and Liu's daughter apparently do not know each other.

Shan allegedly said that he was not collecting women’s underwear, but was discarding the stolen items in garbage bins when nobody was looking.
