Songjiang District has issued its second business license of rural lodging operations to the Maosheng Shanfang hotel in Yexie Town.

Hidden deep in the woods, the centuries-old traditional compound from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), with white-washed walls and gray roof tiles, features exquisite wooden carvings, surreal stone sculptures and rock works, punctuated with pine trees and a lush bamboo forest.

The bonsai garden is alive with 300 pots of plants and flowers in varied shapes, which stays evergreen and blossoming throughout the year.

Its restaurant specializes in fine French cuisine. It would be a dramatic cultural clash to enjoy roast scallops, black truffle and pan-fried steak in a traditional Chinese architecture.

What's special about this village hotel is that most of its food materials are directly from farm to fork.

As a big agricultural base of Shanghai, Yexie has a lot to offer, from fruits to vegetables, from the organic to the free-range.

In recent years, Songjiang has spared no efforts to develop its village tourism resource, a clever strategy that makes the beautiful, yet half-hidden countryside scenery accessible to urban day-trippers, and also creates more job opportunities for local farmers without changing their lifestyle and living environment.

Songjiang's first business license of rural lodging operation was issued to the village hotel 88 Mu Farmland in 2019, which stood out with its rice field that yields Songjiang Rice, a national geographical indication protection product.
