Excellent theater performance artists were honored for their achievements at the 29th Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Awards, hosted at the Shanghai Grand Theater on Friday.

The winners were selected from 121 candidates covering 24 forms of theater, such as Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Huju Opera and dance drama.

A total of 28 artists received awards in the categories of best lead actor, best supporting actor, best new talent in a leading role and best new talent in a supporting role.

Among them was Russian actress Elena Nemzer, who impressed the judges with her role in the anti-war play “Mother Courage and Her Children.”

Shanghai Kunqu Opera Company’s crew of “Four Dreams of Linchuan” and well-known Qinqiang Opera artist Li Mei won special awards for their artistic contributions and endeavors to promote traditional Chinese theater.

Gu Haohao, director of Shanghai Kunqu Opera Company, said that they will continue to "bring brilliant Chinese cultures to the world."

According to Li Mei, a cultural worker should never forget their responsibility to preserve and develop the arts.

The award winners will also present performances for local citizens with a grand show to be presented at the China Art Museum on March 24.
