The Fellas may not be new but it still retains an upbeat vibe thanks to its top-notch location and arguably the most sought-after terrace view in town.

Strategically located at the corner of Yan’an Road E. and Zhongshan Road E1, the terrace is known for its sensational view of the iconic Bund and Pudong skyline. The Fellas does a great job when it comes to a beautiful view and a qualified Italian dining experience. And the restaurant’s loyal customers just keep coming back for more.

I went again recently to capture the irresistible beauty of the Bund, the perfect weather and, of course, some decent Italian treats. The restaurant was still quiet at around 7pm so I picked a comfy terrace seat with a good view. Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the restaurant may have been void of its regular expatriate clientèle but it hasn’t stopped its local diners frequenting the joint.

Cotoletta alla Milanese

My dinner started with deep-fried Mediterranean sardines served with tartare sauce. Brown and crispy, with a squeeze of fresh lemon, those delicious bite-sized fish are wonderful delights with a glass of Prosecco.

It was followed by prawns carpaccio, topped with raspberry, pistachio and caviar.

The raw slices of prawns were seasoned lightly with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. The kitchen used raspberry and pistachio for a sweet, natural flavor but I found the raspberry puree sweetness was a little bit overwhelming, thus taking away the prawn’s natural flavors.

Italy has a long tradition of cooking spaghetti or rice in squid ink, and The Fellas’ homemade black ink spaghetti with sea urchin was one of my favorites. Sea urchin is a delicacy with an acquired taste.

When mixed with hot spaghetti, the roe melts and creates a luscious, irresistible sauce.

Another must-try is the cotoletta alla Milanese. It is probably one of the most typical dishes of Milanese cuisine, appearing on all restaurant menus. It is also a traditionally prepared meal by Italian families.

Crisp, golden breadcrumbs coat a tender veal chop. This classic dish is one of the most well-executed plates here at The Fellas.

Into the late evening the space fizzed with energy, and the terrace was packed with guests fully embracing the Italian art of dolce far niente — the sweetness of doing nothing.
