A toilet renovation project at Hongqiao Railway Station is expected to bring relief to the congestion at peak periods.

The project includes smarter toilets and more cubicles.

According to the station, all its lavatories will be renovated by the end of this year.

The project also includes increasing the ratio of cubicles for females, improving the ventilation system and updating the design.

Electronic screens will display the real-time “occupancy” situation to divert passengers to other ablutions when there's a crowd.

“There are always long lines in front of the toilets during national holidays and travel rush period,” said a cleaner at the station surnamed Chen. “The added cubicles will be a big help to make the lines shorter.”

The project is expected to increase the total number of female cubicles by 54 percent, and the number of male cubicles by 25 percent.
