Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang met Pascal Soriot, executive director and CEO of AstraZeneca, and Henry Keswick, chairman of Jardine Matheson Holdings, respectively last Friday.

Li said Shanghai is China’s economic center and the frontline of the country’s opening-up and reforms. The first China International Import Expo will be held in November, which represents another major step for China to open up to the outside world.

AstraZeneca and Jardine Matheson Holdings have been quite successful in China for many years. Li hoped the two companies will take the opportunity of the upcoming expo to increase their investment in Shanghai and expand their markets and products’ development and research here.

Soriot said the China’s market is indispensable for AstraZeneca’s future development, and the firm will take the opportunity of the expo to increase investment in Shanghai and participate in the city’s bio-medicine’s innovative development.

Keswick said Jardine Matheson has had a long history of friendship and cooperation with Shanghai. Jardine Matheson has great faith in China’s economic prospect and will increase its investment in China and explore new cooperation opportunities with Shanghai in key projects.

Zhuge Yujie, secretary-general of the CPC Shanghai Committee, also attended the meeting.
