Three people were killed in an accident on Sunday around 9:40pm after the signboard of a souvenir shop collapsed on Nanjing Road E., according to the information office of Huangpu District.

Another six were injured and taken to hospital. Their conditions are now stable, the office said in a statement posted on Weibo.

The local administration of work safety has launched an investigation, according to the statement.

The six injured were all transferred to general wards at Shanghai General Hospital after emergency treatment.

Among the seven sent to Shanghai General Hospital, one died en route. The other two, who were rushed to Huangpu Central Hospital, were pronounced dead before arrival.

Psychiatrists will step in to comfort the injured and their families as some are experiencing post-traumatic stress, Hu Yang from the Shanghai General Hospital said.
