Over 10,000 Internet of Things devices are to be installed across Hongqiao business district to improve urban management and safety.

The intelligent devices will be used in sanitation, transportation, fire prevention and other engineering projects in Hongqiao, especially around the National Exhibition and Convention Center where the China International Import Expo will be held from November 5 to 10.

A demonstration zone for Internet of Things devices opened in Hongqiao yesterday.

Wireless communication, artificial intelligence and big data will all be used for urban management in the area.

For example, an intelligent trash can informs cleaners when it is full, increasing the efficiency of sanitation work.

All the trash cans, manhole covers and fire detectors in and around the center will have intelligent devices ahead of the expo. High-tech smoke detectors on the outside of office buildings will send fire alarms to the nearest fire stations.

Over 10,000 intelligent gizmos will have been installed in the core area of the district by the end of October.

In the second phase, the technology will be expanded to cover the whole 86 square kilometers of the business district.
