Masters of traditional Chinese instruments perform at the Jade Buddha Temple.

Local artists, scholars and musicians chanted poems and played traditional instruments at the city's Jade Buddha Temple on Monday night to celebrate China's Mid-Autumn Festival.

Actor Song Huaiqiang, who played Master Hong Yi, (Li Shutong 1880-1942) an influential Buddhist monk and artist, in a popular musical drama recited Hong's works to mark the beginning of the celebration.

Qiao Zhen, one of China's most renowned dubbers and local TV host Ye Huixian then chanted mid-autumn poems. The temple monks' chorus also performed along with masters of traditional Chinese instruments.

It had long been a tradition for Chinese men of letters to celebrate the mid-autumn festival with such a gathering, but the custom was lost amid rapid urban development. The temple says it aims to revitalize the custom and invite the public to experience traditional culture.
