Yangtze River Delta to become e-sports center
Yangtze River Delta cities and district jointly launched an education and innovation center for electronic sports in Yangpu District on Sunday to boost the development of e-sports industry and cultivate professionals.
The e-sports collaborative education innovation center, supported by Yangpu District as well as Nanjing in neighboring Jiangsu Province and Hangzhou in Zhejiang, was initiated at the Yangtze River Delta Electronic Sports Industry Development Forum in Tongji University.
It will focus on the vocational education and training of professional players in the Yangtze Delta region. A series of textbooks for the e-sports education will be released within three years. A number of e-sports laboratories and training centers will also be developed across the Yangtze Delta region, according to the center.
E-sports are organized video game competitions that often involve professional players. China has replaced the United States to become the world's largest e-sports market with 350 million participants, more than half of the world's total.
As part of the Yangtze River Delta International Cultural Industries Expo which closed on Sunday, the forum invited industry leaders and experts from local universities and e-sports companies to share knowledge and opinions on the e-sports development.
Yangpu, Nanjing and Hangzhou jointly released a manifesto on the forum to develop the Yangtze Delta region into a gathering place for companies on the e-sports industry chain.
Yangpu District, which aims to become the world's e-sports center, plans to renovate a number of old factory buildings into venues for e-sports competitions, said Xu Jianhua, deputy director of Yangpu.
In a latest project, a professional e-sports arena with 900 seats is being developed within the former Shanghai No.2 steel factory and will open to public in January, Xu said.
Shanghai University of Sport in Yangpu is offering course on e-sports studies, with graduates scheduled to take their diplomas just in time for the 2022 Asian Games, a Hangzhou-based event where e-sports are expected to be involved.
Courses and programs are also offered to cultivate players, designers, analysts, organizers and commentators.
