A basketball spectator is spending five days in detention after insulting a member of the visiting Jiangsu team by referring to the Nanjing Massacre.

The incident happened on Thursday, a national day of mourning for the 300,000 Chinese killed by the Japanese in 1937.

Jiangsu posted about the man's insulting behavior on Weibo after the game, in which they lost to Shanghai, and soon drew a lot of attention on the Internet.

Police in the Pudong New Area, where the game was held on Thursday evening, said they began an investigation soon after and had identified a 23-year-old surnamed Hu as the culprit by Friday morning.

For the offense of "picking quarrels and making trouble," Hu would be detained for five days, police said.

Hu had confessed and expressed regret with a "thorough self condemnation," according to police. They said they adopted a "zero tolerance" approach to such behavior.

Hu had been stopped by other home fans who had heard him cursing, they added.
