A man has been detained for allegedly spreading a rumor about “an AIDS patient selling blood to spread the HIV virus” over the Internet, Shanghai police said on Monday.

The 25-year-old, surnamed Gong, made up the rumor and posted it on his public WeChat account in October this year, and it soon went viral, police said.

Gong, who comes from Gansu Province, was caught by police in Shanghai's Baoshan District on December 14 in a residential complex.

He has allegedly confessed and said he made the story up to draw more readers to his WeChat account.

Gong could face the criminal charge of “picking a quarrel and making trouble,” police said.
