Punishments, fines for fatal building site accident

A total of 22 people have been punished and fined by administrative and Party discipline agencies for a fatal building site accident, the city’s emergency management bureau has announced.

The total amount of the fine was more than 1.35 million yuan (US$201,445).

Three lives were lost in the accident in September last year at a construction site in Pudong.

On September 10, at 179 Kangnan Road in the Pudong New Area, two workers lost consciousness when drawing water from the basement of a new school project.

During the rescue, another worker also lost consciousness.

The bureau said the contractor lacked safety awareness and failed to recognize the potential risk of suffocation during the underground work. 

The contractor also did not educate workers on safety procedures.
