More than 600 artists, writers and students gather at the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall in heavy rain on Sunday to recreate scenes from Shanghai’s liberation 70 years ago. The group included the 90-year-old composer Lu Qiming, who entered Shanghai with the People’s Liberation Army on his birthday on May 26, 1949. The army fought several battles against the Kuomintang outside and in the city from May 12, 1949, until its liberation on May 27, 1949. The highly disciplined PLA soldiers at the time slept on the streets and tried their best to protect the city’s buildings and its people.
