Hundreds of scholars, heritage artisans, traditional opera artists and doctors organized a volunteer team in the city's outskirts on Sunday to give free lectures at local communities, campuses and villages.

The lecturers from across the city were appointed by Fengxian District government to enhance the artistic quality and virtue of the residents, according to the district government.

Famous baritone Liao Changyong gave the first lecture at the district's conference center on Sunday on the topic "The Beauty of Music."

Other experts will share knowledge on various themes such as traditional culture, art, calligraphy, traditional Chinese operas, tea ceremony and health.

Heritage skill masters in lantern dancing, shadow puppetry, winemaking and paper-tearing have also been appointed to teach the skills to the public for free.

The training campaign aims to promote good family relations, reading habits, voluntary activities and traditional arts among the residents, said Zhuang Mudi, Party secretary of Fengxian.

These free lectures will also be held at companies based in the district.

Local farmers will be encouraged to take part in reading clubs and learn photography, group dances, yoga and other exercises.

The district also released a walking map covering historical and cultural sites. They include the Guhua Park and Xianyuan Park where some of the lectures will be held, along with various cultural activities and the newly unveiled Fengxian Museum.

The district government plans to invest 10 million yuan (US$1.46 million) to support cultural groups and events. Over 100 cultural events will be held annually, including in some communities and villages.
