Shanghai's Metro system is, to put it simply, a modern wonder. It's the longest in the world, stretching hundreds of kilometers and serving millions of passengers each day.

But even the world's most modern subway lines need to keep with the times, and Shanghai is no exception. A raft of new technologies and innovations are being put to use, not only on the front lines but also behind the scenes.

In this three part series, Shanghai Daily's Andy Boreham digs a little deeper to find out what keeps the system ticking. In the first part he dives head first into new AI ticketing technologies getting people to their destinations faster.
