Diamonds add sparkle to import expo
More than 130 carats of diamonds from Belgium have arrived in Shanghai for display at the second China International Import Expo, local customs said on Thursday.
Most passed customs last week while the latest one, a 30-carat round transparent diamond was cleared on Wednesday.
In addition to traditional bright round transparent diamonds, jewelers have brought gems in the shape of a drop, heart and horse eye along with colored varieties.
Each diamond weighs more than 3 carats while the heaviest one is a yellow diamond weighing 35.26 carats.
To ensure a smooth customs clearance, the Shanghai Diamond Exchange Customs consulted with more than 30 diamond dealers to determine their needs in advance. The customs also set up a special window and release its 24-hour hotline to serve the enterprises.
KGK Group's local branch, which imported the first batch of gemstones, said the diamond and jewelry pavilion had been one of the most popular with visitors last year. This year it has reduced the number of diamonds to display but chose larger ones and in different shapes to catch the eye.
Another four jewelry importers are consulting customs over their attendance at the expo.
