One of the new carriages arrives in Shanghai.

Fifteen new trains, all with six carriages, are being added to the Metro’s Line 16. The first of them arrived in Shanghai on Monday.

Of the 33 trains currently running on Line 16, only 10 have six carriages, while the others have three, which, according to Shanghai Metro, is not enough for the increase in passenger numbers.

The new trains will be able to take 200 more passengers than the current six-carriage ones because four of the carriages will have seats facing backward or forward and two will be longer, the company said.

The new trains will offer USB charging and their air-conditioning systems will be more environment-friendly, the company said.

The new trains are expected to come into service from the end of March next year.

Eventually, all trains on Line 16 will have six carriages and the intervals between trains will be shorter, it said.

In October, an average of 216,000 passengers took Metro Line 16 every day, a 2.1 percent rise from September, making it the Metro line with the highest percentage rise of all 18 lines, according to Shanghai transportation commission statistics.

Metro Line 16 runs between Dishui Lake and Longyang Road in the Pudong New Area, passing Shanghai Wild Animal Park, and has interchange stations with Lines 2, 7, 11 and 13.
