Passengers check in using self-service machines at the T1 terminal of the Hongqiao airport.

Some passengers can now board planes by simply scanning their faces at the T1 terminal of the Hongqiao airport.

Xiamen and Hebei airlines have opened the facial recognition system, which means that passengers no longer need to show boarding passes or identity cards before getting on their flight.

Both airlines have relocated their flights and services to the T1 terminal of the Hongqiao airport since late November.

Passengers still need to show identity cards or passports at security check points.

The T1 building reopened a year ago after a three-year renovation, and it now features China's first self-service and paperless check-in and boarding procedures.

Over 20 self-service check-in machines allow passengers to print tickets, check luggage and board without queuing at staffed counters.

The paperless check-in and boarding procedures have also covered all domestic flights at the Hongqiao airport's T2.
