Shanghai Metro said on Wednesday that it has stepped up disinfection of public areas in Metro stations after a new coronavirus strain has caused a pneumonia outbreak in China.

Facilities within stations, including turnstiles, waiting areas and restrooms are now cleaned and disinfected more than usual, Metro operators said. The same goes for air-conditioning and ventilation systems, according to the company.

Metro trains and their ventilation systems are also being treated, as well as shops within Metro stations, according to the company.

Metro staff are advised to wear masks.

The company said it will closely follow the development of the epidemic, and implement practical preventive plans in advance.
